● some common expressions that are used to ask about opinion:
− What do you think about.…? / are you against or for....? /Do you think that…….?
− What’s your opinion about…..? /Do you really believe that…..? / How do you see…….?
− Are you absolutely sure that….? / How do you feel about….? /What are your ideas about…..?
− Am I right in thinking that…? / don’t you think that……?
● some common expressions that are used to give opinions:
• Informal way:
− to be honest……./ I feel that……../ I reckon……../ I don’t feel……./ if you ask me……./ to my mind……/ I guess……../ the way I see it is……./ what I reckon is…………
• Formal way:
− it seems to that…../ I would argue that..../ I don’t agree that......./ I’m sure that……/ I’m convinced that…./ I strongly believe that……/ from my point of view…. / I tend to think that/ in my opinion…../ in my view……/ I don’t think…../ I’m absolutely convinced that……/ I don’t believe that…/ I have no doubts that…../ as far as I am concerned…/ I’d like to point that..
Some expressions that are used to agree and disagree with opinions:
A) Agreeing with an opinion:
− I quite agree with you − I think so too − I share the same view. − That’s exactly what I was thinking my self − You’re absolutely right − You are quite right − I agree completely with this idea − This idea is partially right − That’s good point − I’d go along with that − You are right at point |

B) Disagreeing with an opinion:
− I disagree with you − I don’t think so − I think this idea is bad − I think this idea is possible, but….. − I don’t agree with this idea − That’s different − That’s not entirely true − I’m sorry to disagree with you, but… − That’s not the same thing at all − I’m afraid I can’t agree with you − I see what you mean, but……. − I’m afraid, I don’t agree. |
Practice:
I. Respond to the following statements as indicated:
a. I think women are more patient with children than men → you: (express complete disagreement)
b. Living in the city is very pleasant → you: (disagree and give a reason)
c. Watching TV for me is a waste of time → you: (disagree and give a reason)
d. Science and technology will destroy the world someday. Don’t you think so?
e. Women should be given a great role today → you: (give your opinion)
f. Experimenting on animals is useful → you: (express agreement)
g. Investing in youth is investing in the future of the country → you: (express total agreement)
II. Agree or disagree with the following opinions:
a. Students should be allowed to use mobile phones at schools
b. When you open a school, you close a person. Would you agree with this?
c. We won’t need English language in our future.
d. I think women should be allowed more at the parliament.
